Halo 3 Odst Review

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009
Dutch and Mickey

Dutch and Mickey

Okay Fanatics here is the review of the new game from Bungie Halo 3 Odst. As with all Halo games Odst Puts you in the shoes of yet another Faceless hero although this game has a twist you actually play as not only one ODST but 5 different characters. There is The Main character The Rookie you standard faceless hero, Buck the leader of the squad with a bit of a short fuse, Dutch The squad Badass nuff said, Mickey the Heavy weapons expert, and Romeo the wisecracking sniper. The only character you do not play as in campaign is actually Dare as far as im concerned shes a bitch and she wears a recon helmet lol.

Game play: Well there are 3 major aspects to ODST
1. The nighttime city Its huge biggest map bungie ever made. That combined with the VISR mode (enhances lowlight areas making everything visible)
2. The flashbacks excellent story ark showing what each character went through.
3. Firefight well its horde mode from gears of war 2 on steroids and crack.

When you pick up this game there is a giant urge to run and gun just like you would as the chief but your not a super soldier this time around you actually need to use your environment to your advantage.

All and all the game is solid it wasnt one of those hey lets slap halo on the name and make some money bungie put alot of work into this and it is very apparent.

Pros:
1: FireFight
2: VISR Mode
3: Campaign

Cons:
1: not playing as Dare in campaign
2: The having to get achievments like the audiologs in one play thru.
3: No Sargent Johnson in campaign!!!!!! i mean the man is a badass lol.

Overall Score 8.5/10

Quick what do you have in your psp

I am sporting the new soul calibur broken destiny game. So far I only been playing it for 3 days but it is rock solid!! Right off the bat I made my own character and have been doing lots of quick matches trying to learn the controls. The graphics are awesome and the sound is just as good. I will get back to u with more feedback just as soon as I get more playtime in, also B-man is gonna get the game so he and I will get to play some together over wifi and report on that as well!

Update—- the one thing that really ticks me off about this game is the lack of online play ;( fail

Update

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Hello fans.  Bomberman of AWG with an update.  Still no word on how long the show’s gonna be postponed, but that won’t stop me from bringing you all the latest updates on games and what not.  Now, we here at AWG have been dying in anticipation for Marvel vs Capcom 2 to come out on the XBLA, but due to Capcom being such assholes, the games orginal release date (today June 29, 2009) has been changed to, wait for it:  The end of July!!!!!  For those of you that are in utter disgust and are currently experiencing fits of anger, don’t worry, this is normal.  There are pitchforks are torches being mailed to you as we speak so you may get your angry mob on as you make your way to Capcom studios.  In other news, E3 was a huge success and left little for people to be dissappointed about (some are though).  So until next time, see you online!

cyclops1  If Capcom only realized the chaos they’ve created, then we wouldn’t have to resort to such “violent” tactics.

FFXIV

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

This is officialy my most anticipated game i look forward to seeing the changes from FFXI. I hope they appeal to a more casual gamer who doesnt have time to wait for partys. Based on All the info i read so far it seems as though that is exactally what they are doing also, they are redoing the battle system not sure what they are changing yet but its always good to try new things. They want to expand on the job system mabye make some new ones. They also stress that Weapons are very important for this game like different weapons affect how your character developes. It seems as though they are keeping the Races the same or similar to what is in FFXI(Which sucks i want Vera). They may be allowing more Custimization for character appearance. In one of the interviews they say Chocobos will be making a return but their use may be Different. Perhaps there will be Mounted Chocobo Battles. In the demo video there are alot of machines so i wanna see how that will be. Thats all for now i will be posting more as soon as i have more information

Prototype vs. Infamous

Monday, June 8th, 2009

prototypevsinfamous-430x254

Both these games are shaping up to be the biggest games this summer, but the question is:  WHO IS BETTER?  Many people say Infamous for its similarity to games like Crackdown and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.  Others prefer Prototype, with it being similar to the Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction game.  So, who would win and how do we settle this?  This week on AWG we will discuss and come up with a means to solve this problem.  For now, here’s the Tale of the Tape:

Infamous

Name: Cole

Age: 22-25

Height: 5’6” to 6’1”

Profession:  Bike Courier

Powers: The ability to manipulate electricity.

Backstory: Cole, a courier in Empire City, is told to deliver a package by an unknown customer, but when he arrives, he is told to open it, revealing a sphere-like device. It activates, causing a massive explosion that wipes out 6 city blocks, Cole being the only survivor. Empire City is put under quarantine, and without outside help, chaos quickly descends on the city. Cole, in the hospital under the care of his girlfriend Trish, recovers in about two weeks and discovers he has been infused with electricity-based powers.

Attacks:  Electric shield, Electric Grenade, and Electric Blades

Weaknesses: Water, areas with no electricity (this limits his powers)

Friends and Allies:  Zeke (best friend) and Trish (ex-girlfriend)

Prototype

Name: Alex Mercer

Age: ?????

Height: 5’9” to 6’6”

Profession: ???????

Powers:  The ability to modify his genetic code and absorb others memories and bio-matter.

Backstory:  Alex was an employee at GENTEK, a corporation centered on biotechnology, before the “incident” which took place 3 weeks before the start of the game.  Alex wakes up with amnesia in a morgue under the scalpels of two HAZMAT-suited scientists and escapes dazed into the city. He then begins to come to terms with his powers (including the ability to absorb memories – which is crucial to piecing together his own), and makes contact with his sister, Dana Mercer. Dana assists him in finding members of the conspiracy, which include government officials, military personnel and employees of bio-engineering firm GENTEK, where it is revealed Alex was previously employed.

Attacks: Bio-Blade, Bio-Shield, Bio-Tentacles

Weaknesses: Frequent use of powers drain life and can only absorb a certain amount of bio-matter at a time.

Friends and Allies:  Dana Mercer (little sister) and Karen Parker (love interest)

Chronicles of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena (Xbox 360)

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

In the movies, Vin Diesel’s Richard B. Riddick character is unrelenting and remorseless. Blessed with supernatural night vision, he moves quietly through the dark, brutally eliminating anyone that stands between him and surviving whatever unlucky situation befalls him. 2004’s excellent Escape from Butcher Bay accurately translated this feeling of, for lack of a more eloquent term, being a complete badass from film to a first-person action-adventure game that had just the right blend of sneaking and shooting. taken from 1up.com http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3173628&p=4&sec=REVIEWS this is a game I really want to buy ^^        take a look at the review and let me know what you think

Old School Games

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Back during income tax season, I bought a PSP with my tax return.  My first reason for buying it was to listen to music and cause both of my brothers had one.  What I didn’t realize that it would be the second best game system I’ve ever bought in my entire life ( first being my Xbox 360).  I new the PSP had some nice games and additional hardware to offer.  What I didn’t know was that it had a bunch of old school games and games I’ve never heard of available to it.  Has anybody heard of Darkstalkers?  Darkstalkers is like Guilty Gear, a good game that was overshadowed by other fighting games like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.  This game is by far (other then Guitly Gear) one of the hardest and challenging fighting games of have ever played.  Combos and Special Attacks require skill and timing to pull off correctly and the A.I punishes you for every mistake you make.  But I’ll save the rest for my review.  Anyway, the PSP has this little trend.  Sony takes games you played yesteryear and shrinks it down to the PSP, allowing you to take it anywhere you go.  Feel like playing Castlevania: SOTN (Symphony of The Night for you noobs) well the PSP has it.  Wanna play Street Fighter 3?  It has that one too.  How about some the the greatest side scrolling beat em’ ups?  Not only does it got it, but also some of the best games from the Sega Genesis library.  If  had known this sooner, I would’ve been bought a PSP.  The same goes for the Wii.  Any game that you played as a child that was on the console from NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, N64 are all on the virtual console.  I think the best part of this is that compared to how much these games will cost you hunting them down at flea markets and E-bay, they’re like dirt cheap.  Most of these games are like 5 bucks a pop. Five bucks!!!!!!  Now, I know most of you guys have spouses who are like “Didn’t you just buy a game?”  heres a quick solution.  We’re gonna use  Super Metroid for example.  It cost 800 Wii points on the virtual console.  That’s 8 dollars ($1 dollar is equivalent to 100 points on the Wii).  Now on e-bay, the current highest bid is $149.85.  Now lets do the math:

Wii Console Metroid- $8                              SNES Metroid- $149.85

Wii SNES controller- $20                             SNES- $50-$720

SD card for memory- $5-35                          Total- $199.95- $889.85

Total- $33 to 45

How can anyone argue with this.  This is a prime example of what you save yourself by just getting oldschool games on next gen consoles and handhelds.  I personally love this idea and wish more companies will do this.  Also I wanted to put this up cause I just heard about it:

7770new_storyimage0603710_thumb

That’s right boys and girls, one of the greatest fighting games of all time is coming to the Xbox 360 this summer.  Oh, and it will have online fights.  I know a hell of a lot of people just popped a boner on that one.

Groov

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Have you ever looked at a copy of your favorite game in your 5-year-old’s hands, after he has broken or scratched it and thought to yourself “three hours, I had to work three hours to buy that game”? That is how I think. Sounds weird, I know, but for some reason I do that with just about everything. This is one of the reasons I enjoy Xbox live arcade so much. There is a great mix of classic, retooled, and new games for 20 bucks or less. XNA Creator Club games are even better. You can get some good games for $2.50 and support your fellow gamer.

I was listening to Rebel Fm’s Nick Sutner talking about a XNA Creator Club game called Groov, so I downloaded the demo and checked it out. Groov is a mixture of Geo Wars and a music creation game for 200 Microsoft points, which is a great deal. As you shoot the targets to stay alive, each different target (and there are many of all colors and sizes), comes at you frantically from all sides. So by playing the game you basically become a conductor controlling a funky bluesy jazz type band. Shooting with your right stick while moving with the left provides a continuous barrage of fire that delivers the main beat of the song while the enemies you killed off add to the song’s orchestra of instruments.  What’s cool about this game is that you can sit down and play when you have only a few minutes before work, and you get a good duel stick shooter with a music twist that gives you a challenge. The main draw back in the game play is nothing is new or innovating except for the cool beat. Geo Wars already did this game twice, right? But the song you are creating, which always has the same base beat becomes a new song each time you play because you never play the game the same way. Just a tip, until you get to the guys that can fly outside the map/green box, it seems to work best for me to defend a corner. Also doing that you can get combos by turning all the guys coming after you white ( which happens when you kill them ) and having more targets that are white explode at the same time giving you a bigger score then just killing one guy and moving on.

The thing is I wish all Xbox arcade games were in this price range. I would be able to buy more games. I do get the fact we are talking about a black back ground and some green lines, with some grooving music, but things don’t always have to be cutting edge! Anything can be fun. Most of my friends still play NES and PS1 games and talk about how great the game play is. I know we are not talking about Crono Cross here, but the first time I sat down to play the game two hours went by before I knew it. And a big plus is that my wife didn’t care if I was buying yet another game because it was $2.50, sweet huh?!

Final Fantasy XI

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Final Fantasy XI is the kind of game that you would think as a restaurant manager I would not have the time to play. Well to be honest, I didn’t. It was, however, the kind of game I made lots of time for! Mainly because as a 60 hour a work week father of 5 it was the only time I got to do anything that was fun. My wife and I have worked opposite shifts a lot, so I would log on into the world of Vana’diel for 2 or 3 hours. The problem was the 2 or 3 hours turned into 5 to 6 hours and so on and so on.

Writing a review from a working man’s perspective is an exciting challenge. I’ve played this game since 2004. When the game was first released on pc, I didn’t have the loot to get the ps2 hard drive version. When I first started playing the game, I had primarily played Madden, so I had no idea what was in store for me. An employee of mine named Angel talked me into buying the game with the crazy stories he was telling me every day. Considering my sports game background, I was very intrigued. At first, the demand on my time was like any other game, but only because I really had no idea what I was doing. Once I figured out playing FFXI was not a solo project, and your experience gain and life depended on other real life people, the game took on a whole new meaning for me. The time it took to even put together a party that would work effectively sometimes took as long as the party itself. So if you happen to get a great party you can expect a long night, for the simple reason, you don’t want to give up great experience gain.

A funny story is after the first year of playing the game; I was responsible for at least 8 people in my pizza shop playing FFXI and playing on the Ragnarok server. It was loads of fun going to work and all of us having a common topic to talk about, trying to out do each other with our stories. I was, however, kind of bummed about the fact that Angel was not apart of the fun because he joined the navy and shipped out about 6 months into my first year in the game.

It became very clear I was not going to be able to become the elite player I wanted to be as I started to progress in the game. The time it took to camp Notorious Monsters didn’t just take hours, sometimes it took weeks to months. In the early years of the game (a new expansion has changed this somewhat), when you hit the max level of 75 you would need to join a High Notorious Monster Linkshell (HNMLS). Linkshells (LS) are similar to guilds in other MMO’s. The need to join such a group is to be able to fight the endgame monsters that required an alliance of 18 players to take out. The problem is that you have to show up to all LS events in order to acquire the points you needed to lot on the elite drops. The same with Dynamis Linkshells, if you wanted to get your job’s relic armor it would require joining a LS and going to the instanced battles that took about 4 hours to complete twice a week. So the overall demand of your time in FFXI is big and probably too big if you have a full time job.

The best part of the game, however, is the people you meet, and the friends you make. They can be as strong and long lasting as any friend you make in real live, if not stronger. Your friends from in- game have shared common goals with you and have survived life and death with you.
